About

Balloon X Cumbria is a project to send a balloon into the stratosphere, to record atmospheric data, and hopefully to recover the balloon. The team is made up of four year 11 students from Cockermouth School in Cumbria – Joe, Poppy, Jack & Natasha.

The project is a ‘STEM’ project (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). We will be learning about atmospheric science, electronics, programming and code, teamwork, community outreach, organisation and project management.

All students have different interests, and so tasks will be divided into different categories to suit our interests. The project will be submitted for a CREST Gold award which would be a useful addition to our CVs.

We have created this blog to post our research and progress on. We are also communication via WhatsApp and Twitter, as well as using sophisticated project management software.

We are hoping to get this balloon 100,000 feet (30,000m) into the atmosphere to capture some fantastic video (as well as interesting temperature, radiation, air pressure and GPS location data). Hopefully, the balloon will return safely to the Earth’s surface – and we plan to recover the balloon as well as all of its valuable data!

This blog is constantly active, with new posts every day!

Keep updated on our progress and watch us get closer and closer to our goal.
